Eight Important Questions to Ask When Creating Your Man Cave

Your home is your castle, and, quite rightly, you should design it the way it suits you. Today, people are putting a great deal more thought into how they design their homes when it comes to spaces for recreation. Some may have a games room, a movie viewing room, or other space where they can relax or devote themselves to their hobbies. A lot of men are creating a “man cave,” their own space where they can take time out from everything and just relax.

But what goes into a man cave? What should you consider when creating one? Below is a look at things to take into consideration when developing your own man cave.

Where Will You Build Your Man Cave?

First things first, you need to decide where your man cave will be. In a basement? In the attic? In a spare room? Don’t be fooled into thinking that, because of the word “cave,” it has to be in some dark, underground space. It can even be a garden shed. Just choose your space and give it a purpose so that you can start arranging it the way you want. This leads nicely to the next question….

What Are You Using It For?

What’s your purpose? Are you more of the type of person to watch sports in the armchair with a beer or two? Then you might want to make this into a viewing space, with a TV on the wall and some comfy seating for you and a few mates to gather around, enjoy a few beers, and discuss the worst plays in the NFL that week.

You might even want to incorporate a small computing corner where you can research stats, check the NFL odds, and place a bet before the game.

What Color Will Your Man Cave Be?

Color can make a huge difference to how you feel in the space. Ideally, you should go big and bold with it, but the choice is yours. If you are following your sports team in your man cave, you may want to paint it in the colors of the team. If you’re looking for something sophisticated, black might be the option, whereas if you wish for something comforting and relaxing, you may prefer more earthy tones.

What Furniture Will You Place In Your Man Cave?

The purpose of your man cave will determine the type of furniture you choose for it. Are you going to read lots in your man cave? Then, you’ll want a large, freestanding floor-to-ceiling for all those novels, biographies, and other books.

If your man cave is going to be more of a social space, you’ll want a coffee table and plenty of comfortable seating. If you’re going to transform it into a work-from-home space, you’ll need a decent desk and office chair. You might even equip the cave with a coffee maker so you can sip some good-quality coffee while you persevere with your work tasks.

What Type Of Flooring Will You Have?

There are all kinds of ideas around when it comes to man cave flooring. Wall-to-wall carpeting and, to create some additional warmth and comfort underfoot, some rugs. Depending on the purpose, you may find traditional hardwood flooring more appropriate. If you’re transforming the space into a DIY space, you’ll probably want to stick with concrete.

What Type Of Lighting Will You Have?

This is another important consideration. You can’t be comfortable in your personal space without some good lighting, especially if you’re looking to create some sort of accent or atmosphere in the space.

Dimmable lighting is good so that no matter what the activities or the time of the day, you can adjust the brightness to accommodate it.

What Kinds Of Accessories Will You Add To The Space?

Accessories are important because they’ll infuse the cave with character. You may want to include items from your travels that reflect your hobbies or interests, such as memorabilia from your favorite sports team or music artist.

Artwork or photography is also a splendid choice. You can go for a vintage or more modern style or aesthetic as it suits you.

Is The Heating And Insulation Good?

Heating and insulation are essential considerations, especially if you’re setting your man cave up in a shed, garage, basement, or other space where you’ll feel the cold more. Insulation can also create extra soundproofing so that if you’re going to riff on the guitar, bang the drums, or play other musical instruments, you don’t upset the neighbors.

A man cave is a space to escape from everything that’s going around you and to relax and/or pursue your interests or hobbies. Arrange it to support this so you can take refuge from the world, even if it’s just for a little bit.
